What is this Lobby of Hobbies?

Hobby Lobby is an American craft store megacorporation that purposefully keeps a low number of their stores operational to claim they are a small business and avoid paying higher taxes. They claim to be a "Christian" corporation so that they can make extra money selling christian themed home decor and literature because any artist will tell you they carry mostly mediocre art supplies and craft kits aimed at children. They aren't immune to the commercial blight of Funko pops and trendy collectable gachapon's despite having god on their side. They even have what could be described as "furniture" that will be completely destroyed if it ever falls down a flight of stairs or out of your car on the way home. They focus more on variety and quantity rather than quality much like other big box stores so don't worry, you're not missing out on anything fantastic if you've never been to one.

The asshole in charge: David Green

David Green is a self proclaimed "proud Christian" and as the son of a pastor, he has made it his entire life's duty to shove Christianity down as many non-consenting throats as possible with his millions and millions of dollars gained mostly through tax fraud. He also sells his own book which you can find near the cash register of every Hobby Lobby sandwhiched between pink bibles "for women" and daily prayer journals.

The Green family is also proudly nepotistic, David has appointed his son Steve to the position of president of the company for the sole reason that Steven is his son. They see this craft store as their family legacy to be passed down from generation to generation.

The barcode thing

They don't use barcodes or scanners because they think a randomly generated 666 will kill them or something so employees are expected to enter all item information manually when purchases are made. Because of this practice, employees have stated that doing inventory is a huge pain in the ass. All it takes is one person's manual miscount and they have to recount everything in the fucking store. Just join the 21st century to avoid this problem ffs. The fear and mysticism around 3 stupid numbers is simply medieval.

Queerphobia

While the company doesn't always explicitly state it's queerphobia, their money does the talking for them alongside their hiring practices. Since 2013 they have made it clear that they have no intentions of hiring queer folk of any variety due to stockholders demands.

They also take the firm stance that there are only two genders and refuse to add a third accomodation to their restroom facilities. They hate Transgender people so much that thwey spent a decade in court fighting to keep a transgender woman, who was one of their employees, out of the womens restroom and lost the battle with the court ruling that she is by every definition a woman.

Recently, as of about May 2026 the company has financially supported the "Greater Than" campaign. The campaign is run by the known vocal bigot Katy Faust who hates her lesbian mom for leaving her dad. Because Katy can't get over her mommy issues she's rallying the christiofash together to overturn the Obergefell ruling and end same-sex marriage rights in the USA. The group makes nonsensical claims that "Children deserve loving families" just not gay ones because apparently gay people are motivated solely by desire in the eyes of Miss Faust. In my gay ass opinion I think Katy Faust is motivated purely by hate and corporations like Hobby Lobby are motivated by profit margins, but what the heck could I possibly know? It's not like I have over two decades of lived queer experiences!

Theft of ancient artifacts

Due to the Evangelical disposition of not giving a shit about different cultures, they purchased thousands and thousands of artifacts that were stolen from various locations in the middle east in an attempt to profit off of a bible museum and spread their evangelical propaganda. They also made fake dead sea scrolls. Thankfully, they were sued for this and forced to return all the artifacts.

Anti-abortion and birth control

The CEO David Green has personally donated millions and millions of dollars to anti-abortion organizations that do the whole "focus on family" rhetoric which is just a major yuck for me.

On top of this, they've also denied access to birth control for their employees directly via their corporate healthcare plan. Proof that working for the leopards does not save your face. If they don't like abortions you'd think they'd love the #1 preventer of abortions but nope! They focus on broken and ineffective "Abstinence Only" rhetoric because they just want to tell people what they can and can't do with their bodies.

Hobby Lobby is able to deny contraceptive care thanks to a supreme court ruling they fought for back in 2014 because throwing millions of dollars at the law until it says what you want is preferable to David Green compared to the scandalous alternative *gasp* letting his employees have protected sex!!! 😨😱🤯💀

Seasonal Bullshit

Once, a Jewish man asked an employee if they had anything to celebrate a family member's Bar Mitzvah only to be met with "We don't cater to you people." because this corporation is exclusively Evangelical. They have an entire 24/7 massive Christmas section and employees are trained to say "Merry Christmas!" around the winter season but fuck basically all the other holidays. They have no problem celebrating Easter (despite being historically pagan and using pagan imagery) or carrying other seasonal retail crap of nondescript holiday cheer like stuff that says "have a nice fall!" for the autumn season, but they'll have a fit if you ask for Halloween decorations because All Hallows 'eve is just too darn pagan and demonic!

The insistence on only recognizing the holidays that they think are appropriate is very discriminatory and downright hateful. Funnily enough, they're known to carry rainbow stuff around pride season, but they'll NEVER be caught DEAD with anything that could be interpreted as a same-gender couple. They insist that rainbows are like heterosexual or whatever and yet... They mostly come in stock around June... Curious... It's almost like... As a corporation, despite their claimed beliefs their supply responds to seasonal demand just like any other retail store.

Cruelty and discrimination is the point, unless they can't make enough money.

I've talked about this before but as someone who is familiar with symbols and language that radqueers use, when I saw this in person back in 2024 doing my own investigative reasearch I have to admit that I started having a panic attack and I grabbed an employee as soon as I could making the case as best I could that these beads should NOT be sold anywhere only for them to be back on the shelves a week later. I have made official complaints to corporate referencing documents from the FBI directly, they KNOW what this symbol represents and they want to sell it anyway.

Every time I post about this people call me crazy, but I fucking swear to god the resemblance is SO clear and the fact I've complained with direct proof and they put it back on the shelf? Absolutely disgusting.

Also, I should mention the brand that makes these is called "COLOR gallery" which is an inhouse brand, meaning it's made directly by Hobby Lobby and you can ONLY find these products inside of Hobby Lobby stores. The pedophile who designed these works for the corporation directly.
